Why wont PS3 play games?

I have had my ps3(40gb) for just over a year.

About a week ago it stopped playing games. I insert a game and the light comes on showing that there is a game in the PS3 but no game icon appears. Ive tried turning on “disc auto-start” but that wont work either.

I have since tried playing a Blu-Ray movie (Batman TDK) and a couple of DVDs, they all worked and they played fine!

That means it cant be the Blu-Ray lens thats broken, doesnt it?

Can anyone help? Do you have any ideas of what might be the problem? Thanks.

  1. Since it play blu-ray movies i won’t worry about blu-ray reader

just call sony but tell them that blu-ray reader reads movies

maybe be it’s something with settings 🙂

  2. Kinda strange that the Blu-Ray movie worked, but I still say its probably a laser problem.

Some PS3s have a laser assembly that consists of two lasers. One is for Blu-Ray discs and the other is for DVD/CD. But again, its strange the Blu-Ray movie worked. It could be in the early stages of failure, though. I would get ahold of Sony to arrange repair or replacement. You also could find a local game store that repairs PS3s. They will probably fix it for slightly better rates and laser replacement isn’t too complicated of a fix.

  3. Never herd of a problem like this

Have you dropped your ps3 or hit it with something or it fell from being in the upright postition?

I had a similar problem with my old ps2 and it would only play games with a bluish backing on the disk.

Id advise you to call sony to see if there is anything they could do to fix the problem.
